Many Westlake homes from the '70s and '80s still have wallpaper on the walls and the ceilings. Here's how we take it down, repair the wall underneath and get it ready for paint without the damage DIY removal usually leaves.

Wallpaper removal in Westlake usually means more than one room. In homes built in the '70s and '80s, the paper often covers walls, ceilings and bathrooms, sometimes in two or three layers.
Westlake's median home was built around 1982, right in the wallpaper era. Vinyl-coated papers and strong pastes were standard, and many went straight onto bare drywall. That's why DIY removal so often tears the paper face off the drywall and leaves a wall that looks worse than before.

What people usually ask us for:
Floors and furniture are covered, outlets are taped, and the paper is scored and soaked so the paste lets go. We take it off in sheets wherever we can, which protects the drywall face.

Old paste left on the wall will show through paint as cracks and bubbles. Every wall is washed until the residue is gone.

Torn spots in the drywall face are sealed so they can't bubble, then the walls are skim coated: thin coats of compound, smoothed flat between coats. This is the step most painters skip, and it's the difference between a wall that looks new and one that looks patched.

A sealing primer locks down any remaining residue and evens out the new compound. Then the walls get their finish coats.

When it's done right, nobody can tell there was ever paper on the wall. The rooms read flat and even under any light, and the paint goes onto a sealed, sound surface instead of old glue.

Bathrooms are where wallpaper removal in Westlake gets tricky. Years of steam behind vinyl paper can leave mold spotting on the wall underneath. When we find it, it’s cleaned and the area is sealed with an oil-based primer before any compound goes on, so it can’t stain through the new paint. Foil and metallic papers, common in powder rooms of this era, usually come off in smaller pieces and take more skim coating afterward.
Wallpaper rarely stops at one room. One Westlake homeowner started with the kitchen and dining area and later had us back for the bedrooms and bathrooms, room by room, using the same process each time.
Can you remove wallpaper from a ceiling? Yes. It's slower and needs more protection below, but it's the same process.
What if the drywall tears? We seal the torn face and skim coat over it. It's part of the job, not a surprise.
Can you paint over wallpaper instead? We don't recommend it. Seams and texture show through, and the paper can let go later.
Do you check for mold behind the paper? Yes. If we find mold spotting once the paper is off, it’s cleaned and sealed with an oil-based primer before we skim coat.
Can you do one room now and more later? Yes. Many homeowners start with the kitchen or a bath and do the rest over time.
