Good Cabinets, Dated Finish

Kitchen cabinet painting in Avon usually starts with the same kitchen: solid oak or maple boxes, a honey or cherry stain from when the house was built, and countertops the owners want to keep.

About half of Avon's homes were built after 2000 (Census data puts the median year built around 2001), so most kitchens are at the age where the finish looks tired but the boxes are still sound. Replacing cabinets usually means replacing the counters too, because they're sized together. Painting keeps what works and changes what doesn't.

What people usually ask us for:

  • the look of a new kitchen without a remodel
  • a finish that won't chip the first time a pan hits a door
  • no paint mist drifting through the rest of the house

How We Paint Cabinets, Step by Step

Step 1: Seal off the kitchen

Floors are covered wall to wall and taped at the seams. Counters, backsplash and appliances are wrapped, and doorways are sealed in plastic so spray never leaves the work area. Hardware goes into labeled bags.

Step 2: Label, clean and prime every piece

Every door and drawer front is numbered to its opening. Each piece is degreased, prepped and filled, then primed with a bonding, stain-blocking primer that grips factory finishes and keeps wood tannins from bleeding through.

Step 3: Spray, then hang to dry

Doors are sprayed and hung on a drying rack so both faces cure without touching anything: no brush marks, no runs. Boxes and islands are sprayed in place. Everything gets two coats of Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. It's water-based, so there are no heavy fumes, but it cures hard and smooth.

Step 4: Reassemble and walk through

Hinges are tightened or upgraded so doors close true. New pulls are drilled with a template so every handle lines up. Then the plastic comes down, everything is cleaned, and we walk the kitchen with you door by door.

Kitchen Cabinet Painting in Avon: What to Expect

Lighter cabinets brighten the whole first floor in most Avon homes, where the kitchen opens to the family room. The finish keeps hardening after we leave, so we'll tell you how to treat it gently while it cures. After that, it's a wipe-clean surface built for everyday cooking.

What goes into a kitchen like this

Every kitchen cabinet painting job in Avon is counted piece by piece before we start. On one recent Avon kitchen that meant 27 doors and 11 drawer fronts, plus a two-tone island and a toe kick that needed replacing. On another, the owners chose new pulls, so every old hardware hole was filled and the new ones drilled to a template. The sequence doesn’t change with the size of the kitchen: off, numbered, degreased, prepped, primed, sprayed twice, cured, rehung.

Why Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel? It’s a water-based enamel with urethane in it, so it levels out smooth like an oil paint but without the heavy smell or the yellowing that oil finishes get over time. We use the semi-gloss sheen on most kitchens because it wipes clean and stands up to hands and steam.

Questions we hear

Will painted cabinets chip? Any finish can if it's hit hard enough. Urethane enamel over a bonding primer is far tougher than ordinary paint, and we label your leftover paint for exact touch-ups.

Do you paint the inside of the cabinets? We paint both sides of the doors, plus drawer fronts, face frames and end panels. Interiors are optional.

Can I change my hardware? Yes. Old holes are filled and new ones drilled with a template.

Can the island be a different color? Yes. Two-tone kitchens, like the gray island shown here, are a look we paint often.

Why paint instead of replacing the cabinets? If the boxes are solid and the layout works, painting keeps your counters, backsplash and floors in place. Replacing cabinets usually means replacing the counters too, because they’re sized together.

What sheen do you use? Semi-gloss on most kitchens. It cleans easily and hides fingerprints better than high gloss.
