Solid oak cabinets, yellow counters and butterfly wallpaper: a classic Westlake kitchen from the '80s. Here's how we take a kitchen like that to bright and current without replacing the cabinets.
A local guide, with photos from one Westlake kitchen we painted as part of a bigger project.

Oak cabinet painting in Westlake often starts in a kitchen like this one: solid oak cabinets in a dark stain and a layout that still works. This one also had wallpaper on every surface.
Oak cabinets from that era are built well. The doors are solid, the boxes are square, and the finish is the only thing holding the kitchen back. Painting them keeps the countertops, appliances and layout in place.

Most people want a bright, current kitchen without a remodel, with the pieces that have character kept, like the range hood.
On this kitchen, the walls and ceiling came first. It was part of a bigger project, so the wallpaper came down, the glue was washed off, and the walls and ceiling were skim coated smooth. Doing that first meant the cabinets weren't painted in a dusty room. Most cabinet jobs don't include wall work.

Floors and counters are covered, and walls and ceiling are primed bright white. Cabinet boxes are cleaned, prepped and primed with a bonding primer so the oak grain and stain can't bleed through.

Doors and drawer fronts come off, get labeled and are finished separately, and boxes are painted in place in a hard-curing enamel. Shelves and interiors can stay natural, as they did here.

The steel-strapped range hood was refinished white with its original straps kept as an accent, so the kitchen kept one piece that makes it its own.

The kitchen reads bright and current, the oak's quality is still there under the paint, and nothing had to be torn out.

Oak cabinet painting in Westlake usually means cabinets from the '80s. Their factory finish is slick and their stain is full of tannins that bleed through ordinary primer as yellow spots. On this kitchen, every box and door was cleaned and prepped, then primed with INSL-X Stix, a bonding primer made to grip glossy surfaces, before two coats of Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel in semi-gloss.
On this project the details around the cabinets got the same care: toe kicks and baseboards were refreshed. Because the walls were part of the bigger job, a few spots of mold found behind the old wallpaper were cleaned and sealed before the walls were skim coated.
Will the oak grain show through? Oak has an open grain. Light grain texture can show, which many people like. A grain filler can smooth it further if you want a slab-flat look.
Do you paint the inside of the cabinets? It's optional. Many homeowners keep interiors natural.
Can you paint a range hood? Yes, with the right primer for metal or wood.
Do you paint the toe kicks and baseboards too? Yes. Fresh cabinets next to scuffed toe kicks and baseboards stand out, so we include them in the plan.
